Islamic states toppling???

It seems that there is something of truth in the domino effect (Remember the doctrine that caused the USA to assist south Vietnam in the war against communism - that communism would spread through the far east if it was not stopped somewhere).

Is this what is happening in North Africa and Jemen? All Islamic states, all with governments of doubtable reputations (corruption, oppression, discriminative, high unemployment,...) Will more states follow?

One thing is not so positive.
If people demand more security, they might make the move to the right, to a fascist totalitarian regime, because it provides security. That would mean more radical Islamic states, and not democratic at all. Which is a contradiction: These people on the street fighting for their rights use an ultimate democratic right, and they might agree to trade their voice, their freedom for security.

That would be the worst outcome.
We can surely miss more hate in the world.

  1. it's a fine line between protecting the well being of people and their freedom. if it comes to the point where we've sacrificed our rights to be protected by some imperialistic regime, the only security we'll be getiing is for our physical well being, but what's the point of that if we lose our freedom of speech?

  3. I'm a bit dubious about your use of 'Islamic State' as opposed to 'States with really a lot of Muslims in them'. Tunisia and Egypt are both secular states, i.e. religion is separated from government. They may well become 'Islamic States', where religious figures wield political power, but that remains to be seen.

Both their regimes are already on the right in principle and I'm surprised it has taken them so long to do something about it. The problem to me is that if they get rid of their governments, years of oppression has left no room for an alternative, other than the religious fundamentalists. As we have seen elsewhere, the fundamentalists are organised and prepared to fill the gap left by the departing regime.

While I can only applaud their reasons for attempting to change things there, they may be swapping one form of oppression for another.

    Good Luck to them!

  4. I don't think these are about making Islamic states. That isn't what young Muslims want at all. Many of them want free societies where they can party, use twitter, blog and all the shit we can do in the west without fear of repression. That is what they are shouting about. That is why they are accepting of any religious group willing to help. But very interesting stuff to see nonetheless.

  6. I hope they keep fighting. It's so stupid that in this day and age we humans still can't just have simple respect for the rights of others.this is going to get messy but I hope the citizens prevail.

  10. It's a response to the polical oppression that these people face. These governments are largely backed by the United States, most likely puppet states.
